Finding the Right Accountant for your Tax Needs - A Must for Every Maine Business

By Penny - Freelance Writer - Article Added ( 03/12/2009 )

As a business owner, you have the responsibility of getting your taxes done on time and making sure they are done correctly.  Many often choose a tax accountant to prepare their taxes as it can be confusing, stressful, and very time consuming.  As your taxes may be complicated, you may need to find someone who specializes in your type of business.  But how do you know who you should hire for your tax needs?  The following information will help you to determine which professional you should hire to help you with your Maine tax and federal income tax returns.

A tax accountant is someone who can prepare your taxes.  Many will provide their services to individuals, families, and some businesses. They generally do their work under the supervision of a CPA or certified public account.  The CPA has passed a rigorous exam of the state in which they are certified and will often specialize in a certain area, such as taxes, audits, or even consulting.

When you are searching for the right accountant to handle your tax needs, one of the best things to do is to ask your family, friends, and other business professionals if they can refer someone to you.  While you can simply go and pull a name from the telephone book, it is always best to find out who someone uses that has a similar business and tax situation as yourself.

Before you contact any tax accountant from you list of prospects, you will want to write down a list of your needs.  This list may include the need for someone who is experienced in the type of business you own, someone familiar with local business regulations, someone experienced with Maine tax, and someone who can help you by making suggestions for your business.

When you interview the prospective tax accountants, you will want to have a list of questions prepared for them, such as:

How long have they been in business?

Do they have a list of references?

     How large is their firm?

Will they be handling your account themselves or will the work be done by an assistant?

Will all work completed be reviewed by a CPA?

What will their firm charge for services provided?

After you meet with the certified tax accountant, call them back a few days after your initial interview with a tax question.  You will want to find out how quickly they return your call as well as how prepared they are to answer your question.  This will help you to determine which tax accountant is right for you.

When you discover the need for a tax accountant to handle your Maine tax and federal returns, you must make sure you be detailed in your search.  Having the right CPA take care of your tax needs can help your business to become more successful.  Make certain you choose someone you are comfortable with and someone who understands the needs of your company.
