Since its creation in 1974, the Maine State Lottery has grown to become a favorite local past time. It started with a single weekly draw, and now ranges from $1 scratch tickets, to the Powerball, Megabucks, and Weekly Grand. The Maine State Lottery provides a source of amusement for players of all budgets, and many of its eager participants are lucky enough to walk away with a cash prize.

On June 27th 1974, the Maine State Lottery opened with a 50-cent ticket for a weekly draw called “Play Me.”  The Lottery met with great success and over the years it has continuously expanded. In April of 1985, the Maine State Lottery entered in the first multi-state lottery, The Tri-State Lotto Compact, which included Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.  That same year, the Tri-state Megabucks was adopted, and Portland, Maine found its first Tri-state Megabucks winner Richard Campbell, who took home $935,919 in cash prizes. The Maine State Lottery is always adding new products, and hosts many different promotions each year such as the Summer Spectacular, where participants receive a free bonus Raffle Ticket with the purchase of certain lottery tickets.

Currently, the Maine State Lottery offers a wide array of options, and tickets can be purchased at any authorized Lottery retailer. Among its most popular products, are the Instant Tickets, the Powerball, and Megabucks. Instant Tickets are scratch tickets that range from $1 to $20, and participants can win up to $500,000. Another option that the Maine State Lottery offers is the Powerball. To play the Powerball costs just $1, but the prizes are well into the millions! Players choose six numbers, five from the upper panel, and one from the lower, and drawings are held every Wednesday and Saturday. Megabucks is another good choice. To play, one must select six numbers from a field of forty-two; the more numbers matched, the greater the prize! Drawings for Megabucks are held twice during the week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The Weekly Grand, and Pick 3 and Pick 4 are also popular. The Weekly Draw, also known as “The Paycheck Game,” awards a possible $1000 per week for a lifetime. Players choose four numbers from one to thirty-five, and an additional number known as the Lucky Ball. Playing is done on location. Pick 3 and Pick 4 are similar games in nature. Players pick three or four number, and bet between 50¢ and $5. Drawings are held twice per day, at 1:00 PM and 6:50 PM.

Whether you are looking to spend 50¢ or $50, the Maine State Lottery has something for everyone, and with several convenient locations across Maine, the Maine State Lottery makes purchasing lottery tickets fast, simple, and fun.
